Pulwama Night Cricket Draws 20,000+ Crowd in Spectacular Show of Community Spirit

August 20,2026- In a district once synonymous with conflict and unrest, floodlights lit up the Pulwama Sports Stadium as more than 20,000 spectators packed the venue for a night cricket tournament featuring 10 teams — the latest sign of a sporting revival sweeping South Kashmir.

A Stadium Bursting at the Seams

The tournament, part of a growing wave of floodlit cricket events across the region, drew crowds far beyond what organisers had anticipated. Fans travelled from across the Valley to witness the spectacle, filling every available space in and around the stadium as the evening’s matches unfolded under the lights.

For a district that has spent much of the past decade associated with militancy and instability, the sight of a jam-packed stadium cheering for cricket rather than confronting conflict marked a striking departure from its recent past.MLA Calls It a Message of Hope

Speaking at the event, Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para described the initiative as an effort to bring “light, happiness and hope” to a generation that has been hurt and aggrieved. Para, who has consistently backed such sporting initiatives in his constituency, framed the tournament as more than just entertainment — calling it a youth-led movement aimed at healing a community shaped by years of uncertainty.

He has previously pointed to Kashmir’s demographic reality — with a majority of the population under 30 and many scarred by conflict — as the reason such events carry weight beyond the boundary ropes. For Para, cricket under floodlights represents an accessible, joyful outlet for a generation that has had few such opportunities close to home.

Part of a Larger Sporting Revival

This latest gathering builds on a series of similar night cricket tournaments that have taken off in Pulwama over recent months, each drawing larger crowds than the last. What began as a modest, community-organised initiative has snowballed into one of the most talked-about sporting phenomena in the Valley, with organisers renting professional floodlight rigs and upgrading pitches to accommodate the growing scale of these events.

The trend has not gone unnoticed at the national level. Earlier editions of Pulwama’s night cricket matches drew praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who referenced the “unprecedented” atmosphere of thousands of young spectators enjoying cricket after dark in a district long associated with violence.

Cricket as a Bridge

Organisers and local leaders alike see these tournaments as part of a broader effort to reshape the narrative around South Kashmir — replacing headlines about unrest with stories of community, sport and youth participation. Ten competing teams brought players and supporters from across the district and beyond, turning the stadium into a shared space for celebration rather than division.

For many attendees, the scale of the turnout — well over 20,000 people on a single night — reflected a hunger for normalcy and recreation that has often been in short supply. Families, students and cricket enthusiasts of all ages filled the stands, with the electric atmosphere extending well beyond the boundary of the playing field.

Looking Ahead

With each edition drawing bigger crowds, organisers say they intend to expand the format further, potentially taking similar night cricket tournaments to other parts of the Valley. For now, though, Pulwama’s floodlit nights are being held up as an example of how sport can offer a district — and its youth — a new script to write, one match at a time.
