NIT Srinagar Marks National Sports Day 2026 with Three Days of Sporting Activities

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday began a three-day celebration of National Sports Day 2026, being observed from August 28 to 30 under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.”

The celebrations are being organised in line with the nationwide Fit India Movement initiative under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. National Sports Day is celebrated annually on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.

The “Pass the Ball” and “29 Challenge” activities held on Friday witnessed the participation of students and staff members, promoting physical activity, fitness and team spirit on the NIT Srinagar campus.

The campaign focuses on the three pillars of “Tribute, Play and Move”, encouraging students and members of the institute community to participate in sports, fitness activities and awareness programmes.

In his message, Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Anurag Misra said sports and physical activities are an important part of holistic education and urged students to actively participate in the National Sports Day activities. He emphasised that regular participation in sports helps promote discipline, teamwork, physical fitness and overall well-being.

Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman highlighted the importance of creating a healthy and active campus environment, saying that initiatives such as National Sports Day provide students with an opportunity to balance academic pursuits with physical activity and sports.

Dr Manoj Kumar, In-charge Faculty, SAS, said the celebrations are aimed at encouraging greater participation in sports and fitness activities among students and staff. He encouraged the Institute community to make physical activity a regular part of their daily routine.

On the occasion, Kowsar Ali Mir, SAS Officer, said the National Sports Day activities provide an opportunity to bring students and staff together through sports and fitness.

She encouraged participants to take part enthusiastically in the upcoming activities and make physical activity a regular part of their lives.

Sohail Ahmad Baba (SAS Assistant) also highlighted the importance of sports and physical fitness, saying that such activities help promote discipline, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle among students and staff.

The event was also graced by the presence of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Security Officer; besides the SAS staff and students. The National Sports Day celebrations will continue at NIT Srinagar through August 30.

The programme is being organised with the participation of the School of Applied Sciences (SAS), its staff and students. The activities include sports and fitness-related initiatives aimed at promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

The nationwide campaign also encourages institutions to organise sports competitions, fitness activities, awareness campaigns, “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein” and the Special Edition of Sundays on Cycle.
