Zojila Tunnel Breakthrough Strengthens All-Weather Link Between Kashmir and Ladakh

The strategically important Zojila Tunnel, spanning 13.153 kilometres and set to become Asia’s longest bi-directional road tunnel, is scheduled to be inaugurated today, marking a transformative moment for connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.

Carved through the rugged Himalayas, the tunnel is designed to provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, overcoming decades of disruptions caused by heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme weather conditions at the Zojila Pass. Once operational, it will ensure year-round movement of people, goods, and essential services, significantly reducing travel time and improving road safety. The breakthrough ceremony, attended by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, symbolizes the completion of a crucial phase of excavation work and brings the ambitious project closer to completion.

The tunnel is expected to have far-reaching benefits for the region, boosting tourism, trade, economic activity, and strategic mobility. It will provide reliable access to remote areas, strengthen supply chains, and improve the quality of life for residents of Ladakh and border regions.

Officials described the project as a testament to India’s engineering capabilities and commitment to developing modern infrastructure in difficult terrains. The Zojila Tunnel is widely regarded as one of the most significant road projects in the country and a key step toward transforming connectivity in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

With the successful breakthrough, the project stands as a symbol of progress, resilience, and development, reflecting the vision of a modern and connected Himalayan region.
