In one of the most assertive anti-drug initiatives in recent times, Jammu & Kashmir Police on Friday launched a sweeping district-wide campaign in Ganderbal, combining enforcement with mass awareness to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse
Declaring an uncompromising stand, police made it clear that there will be “zero tolerance” towards drug peddlers, with intensified efforts underway to dismantle trafficking networks.
Senior officials said that tracking down drug suppliers and breaking the chain of narcotics distribution has been placed at the top of the district’s policing priorities.
“We will not tolerate this menace. No stone will be left unturned to crack down on drug peddlers,” officials asserted, while calling for strong public cooperation to make the campaign effective and result-oriented.
The initiative, carried out under the ongoing 100-day “Nasha-Mukt J&K Abhiyan,” was led by SSP Ganderbal and SDPO Kangan, with active participation of concerned SHOs. Awareness and outreach programmes were held across key areas including Kangan, Gund, Sonamarg, Kheerbawani and Safapora, where police teams directly engaged with locals, youth and stakeholders.
During the programmes, officials highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals, families and society at large. They urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any instances of drug peddling to law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that public support is crucial in eliminating the menace.
In a significant boost to the campaign, religious leaders also joined hands with the police to spread awareness. During Friday prayers across Kangan, clerics addressed large congregations, shedding light on the harmful effects of drug abuse and urging people to stay away from it.
At Jamia Masjid Sharif Gund Sonamarg, a special sermon reinforced the message of building a healthy, disciplined and drug-free society.
Officials expressed concern over the increasing vulnerability of youth to substance abuse, noting that drugs have the potential to destroy entire generations if left unchecked.
Parents were advised to take a proactive role by monitoring their children’s daily activities, maintaining open communication, and ensuring they do not fall into harmful habits.
Reiterating their resolve, police said the campaign will continue in the coming time, combining strict enforcement with sustained awareness efforts. “Our aim is clear—a drug-free Ganderbal. With collective responsibility and firm action, we are confident of achieving it,” officials added.
