Kupwara’s Wushu Star Clinches Gold at International Championship

A young Wushu athlete from a village in Kupwara rose to international prominence by clinching a gold medal at the Nordic Wushu International Championship in Sweden from Dec 12 to 14.Displaying exceptional skill and determination, the athlete, as per an official statement issued by the J&K Sports Council on Sunday, fought three high-level bouts, defeating Italy in the opening match, securing a knockout victory against Bangladesh in the second, and overcoming the host nation Sweden in the final to clinch the top position on the podium.“Trained under the Khelo India framework, this achievement stands as a powerful example of how the Khelo India initiative is transforming grassroots talent from rural and border areas into international champions,” reads the statement. The victory highlights the programme’s role in strengthening India’s sporting ecosystem and making the nation proud on the global stage.
