GI-Tagged Kani Shawls Gain Entrepreneurial Push Through Kupwara Start-up

In a major boost to the preservation and promotion of Kashmir’s renowned Kani weaving craft, a group of trained artisans has launched a start-up venture at Tootgund, Handwara, in Kupwara district. The initiative has begun operations with six handlooms and employs more than 10 skilled artisans, creating new livelihood opportunities while carrying forward one of the Valley’s most celebrated traditional crafts.

The start-up focuses on producing GI-tagged Kani shawls, globally admired for their intricate craftsmanship, fine weaving techniques, and rich cultural heritage. The venture reflects the growing entrepreneurial spirit among young artisans who are blending traditional skills with modern business practices to reach wider markets.Recognising the increasing international demand for authentic GI-certified Kani shawls, the Handicrafts Department has pledged comprehensive support to the young entrepreneurs. The department will facilitate capacity building, market linkages, design innovation, branding, and participation in national and international exhibitions to help the venture expand and access premium niche markets for Kashmir handicrafts.

Officials said the initiative is expected to generate sustainable employment for local artisans while preserving the centuries-old Kani weaving tradition. By encouraging artisan-led enterprises, the government aims to strengthen the handicrafts sector, enhance exports, and position Kashmir’s handcrafted products in high-value global markets.

The start-up at Tootgund is being seen as a model for empowering skilled artisans through entrepreneurship, ensuring that the legacy of Kashmir’s iconic Kani shawls continues to thrive while contributing to the region’s economy.
