Big screen magic returns to Handwara with theatre reopening

Handwara, nestled in the northern district of Kupwara, is once again embracing the enchantment of the silver screen, much to the joy of its residents, particularly the youth. After a prolonged absence, the cinema has returned, marked by an inaugural event on Tuesday that attracted an enthusiastic crowd.
During the grand opening, Bhat Danish, a college student, exuded excitement about witnessing a movie on the big screen alongside his friends. Danish, like many others in Handwara, had never before experienced the awe of a cinema’s grandeur, making this event all the more special.
Handwara holds a sentimental connection to cinema, with locals sharing tales of a bygone era when the town hummed with the thrill of movies. Braripora, home to the once-thriving “Hemal” cinema, fell into silence due to unfortunate incidents, yet the spirit of cinematic appreciation endured.
Mudasir Ahmad, manager, Jadooz Cinema in Handwara, expressed his elation at the overwhelming response the cinema received from all age groups. The cinema boasts a seating capacity of 100, with plans to introduce a café on the sidelines, offering a holistic entertainment experience.
Abdul Ahad, a local legend, fondly recalls memories of a small screen at Khunbal Handwara, where a multitude of people used to gather in those days. However, the turmoil that engulfed Kashmir in the 1990s led to the closure of these cinematic avenues.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently had assured to bring back the magic of the big screen to every corner of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. While the revival of cinema has already started in some districts, others are following suit, reigniting the joy of movie-going.
Despite the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir being a backdrop for numerous films over the years, the lack of cinemas prevented its own people from savouring these cinematic masterpieces.
Aijaz Ahmad, a shopkeeper, highlighted how this resurgence would provide a locally accessible avenue for movie enthusiasts.
The revival of cinema in Handwara not only promises delightful entertainment but also offers a renewed sense of optimism among its people.
