Beyond  Trails: Zahid Rafiq Kota’s quest to explore Himalayas

Zahid Rafiq Kota states that he has achieved a milestone by exploring more than 200 alpine lakes across the Himalayas. He says that this milestone marks an extraordinary journey built on relentless endurance, rigorous preparation, discipline and an unyielding determination to explore the mountains beyond the known trailsAs per a statement issued, what makes the achievement significant is not simply the number 200+, but the years of effort behind it—long approaches, demanding terrain, unpredictable weather, physical exhaustion and countless hours of preparation, navigation and route planning. Each expedition has demanded patience, resilience and the willingness to venture where few have travelled.

The Himalayan landscape offers an extraordinary canvas for such exploration, stretching from the Outer or Shiwalik Himalaya and Lesser/Middle Himalaya to the Greater/Higher Himalaya and the Trans-Himalaya. The Pir Panjal, Kashmir and Kishtwar high mountains, along with the Zanskar, Ladakh and Karakoram ranges, hold a remarkable world of glaciers, alpine meadows, high passes, remote valleys and pristine high-altitude lakes.
For Zahid, 200+ lakes is more than a milestone—it is a testament to perseverance. His journey has also included summiting Mount Tatakooti, Mount Loharkut, Mount Harmukh and Katsal Peak, with expeditions involving new routes and challenging approaches.

His technical foundation was strengthened through the Basic Mountaineering Course at the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam, adding formal training to years of practical mountain experience.
Balancing a professional career with demanding expeditions, Zahid has demonstrated that extraordinary achievements are built through ordinary days of preparation, consistency and commitment.

He acknowledges the unwavering support of his family, friends and trekking companions, whose encouragement has been an integral part of the journey.
His achievement also reflects the enormous potential of Kashmir and the Himalayas for responsible adventure tourism, exploration and eco-tourism.
For Zahid, the summit is never simply a destination and 200 is never just a number. Every lake explored, every peak climbed and every new route opened is another step in a continuing journey—to explore further, prepare harder, endure longer and inspire the generation that follows.
