The process of GI tagging on Kashmiri carpets is gaining momentum, offering a glimmer of hope to the industry by ensuring recognition of authentic products in international markets. However, concerns linger regarding the proliferation of machine-made imitations, posing a threat to the traditional craft.
Ashiq Sheikh, Director of Ferozson Exports Private Limited, expressed optimism about the industry’s revival since the introduction of GI tagging. While demand for Kashmiri silk carpets is yet to reach its peak, there’s a noticeable uptick in international interest, breathing new life into the sector.
Despite challenges such as disturbances in the European market due to the Russia-Ukraine war, there’s hope for recovery, buoyed by the recognition bestowed upon the industry through GI tagging. However, the prevalence of counterfeit products remains a pressing issue, necessitating stricter regulations and oversight from the J&K government.
The implementation of GI tagging enables buyers to distinguish between authentic and fake products, promoting transparency in purchases. Efforts to raise awareness about the significance of GI tagging and its benefits should be intensified, both domestically and internationally.
A commendable initiative by the Government of India, featuring Kashmiri art on the National Geographic channel, highlights the rich cultural heritage of the region and its artisans. Such efforts contribute positively to the promotion of the industry on a global scale.
Ferozson Exports Private Limited, the first company from Kashmir to receive GI tagging, has made significant strides in promoting authentic Kashmiri carpets internationally. With one-third of total exports supplied to the global market and over two thousand five hundred carpets GI-tagged, their efforts have been recognized and lauded.
The initiative of GI tagging with a barcode, commissioned by the LG of the Union Territory, Manoj Sinha, in 2021, underscores the commitment to safeguarding the authenticity of Kashmiri crafts. However, continued vigilance and collaborative efforts are crucial to overcome the challenges faced by the industry and ensure its sustained growth and prosperity.
