NMC enhances MD Psychiatry seats from 8 to 12 in GMC Srinagar

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has increased MD (Psychiatry) seats from eight to 12 in Government Medical College, Srinagar in a move to give boost to mental healthcare in J&K.
The decision has been taken after the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) reviewed the assessor’s Report regarding the faculty, their experience, publication and other teaching facilities including infrastructure available at Government Medical College, Srinagar.
The admissions would start from the academic calendar year 2022-23.

“It is to inform that MARB reviewed the assessor’s report on July 16 regarding faculty, their experience, publication, and other teaching facilities including infrastructure available at GMC Srinagar under Kashmir University, for an increase of seats in MD (psychiatry) for the academic year 2022-23,” said Member/President, MARB, National Medical Commission.

NMC said that no student should be admitted to the course till the formal permission of MARB.
” The applicant should provide all infrastructural facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, buildings, equipment and hospital facilities as per National Medical Commission norms. The Private Medical College should Provide Bank Guarantee of required amount against increase of 04(Four) seats in favour of National Medical Commission, New Delhi valid for three years or till the course is recognised, whichever is later, from a nationalized/ scheduled Bank as per NMC/MCI’s norms,” NMC said.
The Medical Colleges/ institutions will undertake to implement the decision regarding payment of stipend to the PG students similar to PG students of Govt. Medical Colleges in their State.

Mohammad Maqbool Dar, HoD, Psychiatry, GMC Srinagar told Rising Kashmir that NMC has taken this decision after witnessing the overall performance and strength.
” The cases of psychiatry issues are increasing. So, such steps would boost the psychiatry field. Initially, there were 2 MD seats, then the number increased to four, then four to eight. Now, it is 12. It is a positive step,” Dr Maqbool said.
