Wular Lake set for transformation into eco-friendly tourist hub..

In a bid to boost tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the region, the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) is actively working to transform Wular Lake, reminiscent of the iconic Boulevard of Dal Lake.

The ongoing project aims to create an eco-friendly Boulevard along the periphery of Wular Lake, as part of efforts to establish the area as a prominent tourist destination. The construction of a walkway from Garoora to Banyari is nearing completion, with work also underway for a park beneath the Wular Vintage Park.
Local residents have welcomed the development, noting that the new walkway will enhance accessibility and enjoyment of the lake.
“This development is not merely about beautification; it is about integrating Wular Lake into everyone’s life,” remarked a shopkeeper.

Once facing survival challenges, Wular Lake now stands as a vital component of Kashmir’s ecosystem, boasting rich historical significance. Transforming it into a tourist hotspot marks a significant step towards preserving and showcasing Kashmir’s natural splendor.

Recent initiatives such as the introduction of shikaras and the setup of tents along the banks are part of a broader plan to introduce sustainable and engaging tourist activities. Plans for a five-star hotel are also in motion, offering the potential to revolutionize the local economy.
“This could be a game-changer for us, bringing in tourists from all over the world,” said a young entrepreneur.

Zurimanz villagehas been identified as an ideal destination for domestic and foreign tourists, with proposals to introduce water sports and various recreational activities.
Despite facing challenges like deforestation and encroachment over the past three decades, Wular Lake’s future looks promising with the establishment of WUCMA and the launch of an Integrated Management Plan for its conservation.

In the project’s initial phase, ₹200 crore has been allocated from the Union Territory’s fund, with a total estimated project cost of ₹1,600 crore. The focus is on biodiversity preservation, ecotourism promotion, shoreline development, recreational parks, bird-watching spots, and the construction of the Wular Boulevard.

The vision of the Bandipora Administration for Wular Lake extends beyond aesthetic enhancements, prioritizing sustainable tourism and ecological preservation.
“We’re committed to develop Wular Lake in a way that respects its natural environment while providing economic benefits to the local community,” stated an official.
