Week long International Women’s Day Celebrations concluded at Amar Singh College Srinagar

A weeklong series of events commemorating International Women’s Day, culminated on the 8th March 2022 with the final event being organised at Bukhari Hall for the final celebration of the day. The week long activities included a painting competition, essay writing competition, psychological counseling of female students and staff of the college and an elocution competition.

On the final day of the series of events, the programme was presided over by the worthy principal, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Rather who in his presidential address poke at length about the rights of girls and women, citing social, religious, philosophical perspectives and aspects on the status and prestige associated with what the principal called “the fair gender”. Prof. Rather stressed on the role of youth, in particular, in creating and sustaining an equal and equitable society. As the nation celebrates its 75th year of Independence as “Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav”, the role and position of women needs to be emphasised and furthered for a truly developed and prosperous nation.

On the occassion, the worthy principal and the coordinator of the programme Dr. Shabnam Ara, while recognizing the accomplishment and contribution of women in higher education, felicitated Dr. Gazala Gayas and Prof. Sabreena Syed, the senior academicians and faculty members of the college, with flower bouquets respectively. Dr. Gazala Gayas recited her poetic composition on the theme of women’s identity.

The keynote address of the programme was presented by the programme coordinator, Head Department of Sociology, NSS Programme Officer and Dean Students’ Welfare, Cluster University Srinagar, Dr. Shabnam Ara, who in her speech focused on the importance of choices for women and deliberated on the theme of the International Women’s Day 2022-  #breakthebias.

A special lecture was delivered by Prof. Mudasir Wani, Department of Political Science and member orgnaising committee of the International Women’s Day 2022, who spoke about the historical stages of feminism and the various ideological transitions that feminism underwent since its inception as a social movement and political philosophy. Also speaking on the occasion was Dr. Kousar Muzamil, Coordinator IQAC of the college, who in his address focused on the the various social practices of the contemporary times that diminish and marginalize the status of women including gender bias, female foeticide, etc. and implored the younger and educated generation to work with commitment and conscience towards gender equality and an equitable society.

During the course of the event, two cultural programmes were also presented by the students of the college, under the guidance of Dr. Afshana, Head Department of Music. During the event, certificates of merit and participation were distributed by the dignitaries present to the winning students of the various competitions organized during the week.

The week long programme of events was coordinated and organised by Dr. Shabnam Ara, the stage was managed by Dr. Ulfat Jan, Head Department of Psychology, and the Formal Vote of Thanks on the occassion was proposed by Dr. Zahid Zaffar, Convener Hospitality and Protocol. The Technical support was provided by Dr. Tawseef Ahmad, Department of Computer Applications and the rapporteurs of the event were Dr. Shafia and Prof. Alia Muzaffar, Department of English.
