Kashmir Valley is experiencing an unprecedented surge in tourism, with over 2.6 million visitors recorded from January 1 to September 30, 2024. According to the Tourism Department, the total number of tourists reached 2,628,509, including 35,254 foreign visitors, underscoring the region’s growing international appeal as a prime tourist destination.
The statistics of monthly tourist arrivals reveal that January saw 199,398 visitors, including 2,167 foreigners, followed by 176,134 tourists in February, with 6,559 foreigners. March recorded 226,726 visitors, and April witnessed a rise with 288,398 tourists, of which 7,348 were from abroad.
Similarly, in May, 297,173 tourists were registered, including 2,802 foreign visitors, while June marked a significant increase with 378,022 tourists in total, including 3,119 foreigners. July experienced a record surge in tourist arrivals, with 526,465 visitors, including 2,740 foreigners, while August recorded 339,539 tourists, and September saw 196,654 visitors, including 3,446 foreigners.
A tourism official added that this year has seen an increase in visitors from across the country exploring lesser-known destinations in Kashmir, a trend not observed in previous years.
The growing number of visitors is not only a positive sign for Kashmir’s tourism sector but also provides a boost to the local economy, benefiting hotels, local businesses, and tour operators. The government remains optimistic about the future of tourism in Kashmir and is committed to further enhancing the infrastructure to accommodate the increasing influx of visitors, tourism officials said.
Officials have attributed this growth in tourism to a combination of factors. One major highlight is the successful G20 Tourism Meeting held in Srinagar earlier this year, which created a buzz and showcased the region’s potential for tourism on a global platform. An unprecedented rise has followed the meeting in the number of tourists, particularly in the last two months.
Additionally, the recently held Legends League Cricket event in Srinagar has further boosted the region’s tourism prospects. The government expects this trend to continue, with more tourists expected in the coming months, especially during the winter season, which attracts travellers for snow activities.
The growing popularity of Kashmir as a top tourist destination highlights the government’s remarkable efforts to develop and promote tourism. The warm reception of foreign tourists reflects the success of these initiatives.
