Sonamarg set to shine as winter tourism hub

Sonamarg is gearing up for a vibrant winter season with major tourism initiatives designed to boost its appeal as a premier winter destination.

The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) is making significant preparations to offer top-notch winter sports activities. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the winter games and experience the beauty of Sonamarg.”

Last year marked a milestone for Sonamarg, as ice skating was introduced for the first time, attracting numerous participants. Building on that success, this year’s offerings will expand to include not only ice skating but also drag ski lifts, skiing, and other winter-related activities.

G.M. Bhat, CEO of the Sonamarg Development Authority, expressed optimism about the region’s potential, emphasizing the efforts to transform Sonamarg into one of the world’s best winter tourist destinations. “We are doing everything possible to enhance Sonamarg’s reputation and ensure visitors have a memorable experience,” he said.

He also highlighted the Z-Morh Tunnel’s critical role in facilitating year-round access to Sonamarg, predicting a significant increase in tourist footfall this winter. “The opening of the Z-Morh Tunnel will attract a major tourist rush. This will benefit everyone involved in the tourism sector and generate employment opportunities,” Bhat remarked.

For the convenience of visitors, Sonamarg offers 2,400 rooms, including government accommodations, ensuring a comfortable stay even during the chilly winter months.
Bhat expressed confidence in Sonamarg’s growing stature as a winter hotspot. “We are preparing for winter tourism and games so that everyone can participate and enjoy. In the coming years, Sonamarg will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Gulmarg and Pahalgam as a top winter destination,” he added.
