In a significant boost to cancer care, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura has got a state-of-the-art Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) from Govt. of India, with the facility set to become operational soon.
Director SKIMS Soura, Dr Mohd Ashraf Ganaie said they have been working to provide the best possible facilities for cancer patients saying that the institute provides free drugs and drugs at discount rates at its drug counters.
“I am pleased to announce that we have acquired a state-of-the-art Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) system, valued at Rs 10.5 crore, provided by the Government of India,” he said.
The director said that the advanced equipment will play a crucial role in enhancing research, diagnostics, and drug analysis.
“We are in the process of setting up the facility, and it is expected to become operational very soon, significantly boosting our capabilities in medical and scientific research.”
The LC-MS is a laboratory technique that can be used to detect and identify cancer biomarkers in biological samples. It’s a powerful tool for cancer research that can help discover new molecules and therapeutic pathways.

“Earlier, people were terrified just hearing the word ‘cancer.’ However, with significant advancements in research, many cancers are now treatable and even curable, especially when detected in the early stages,” said Dr Shariq Rashid Masoodi, Head Department of Endocrinology and Dean at SKIMS Soura.
Dr Masoodi said awareness is important and high-risk individuals should undergo regular screenings. “Lifestyle disorders like obesity have contributed to several cancers, including breast and colon cancer,” he said.
While cancer has become more common, research and technological advancements have shown that early detection can lead to successful treatment.
“By detecting cancer early, we can not only save individuals but also protect families, communities, and society as a whole,” Dr Masoodi said.
He said that obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and substance abuse are modifiable risk factors that can be reduced through healthier lifestyle choices.
Kashmir with a unique cancer profile has seen a rise in cancer cases over the years with SKIMS Soura recording over 5,200 cases in 2024. Similarly, GMC Srinagar logged 1300 cases of different types of cancers, a trend that has continued over the years.
