Republic Day: J&K tableau reflecting traditional art, culture to be part of main parade

With just three days left for the 76th Republic Day, the tableau of Jammu and Kashmir, which will be showcased on this occasion, has been designed to reflect the art and culture of the Union Territory. The first sneak peek of the tableau was caught on cameras in New Delhi’s Kartavya Path on Wednesday.

The tableau is a visual treat and is set to leave audiences at the Republic Day parade spellbound.

Woodwork consists of a large chunk of J&K’s tableau

The well-crafted facade, made of wood is one of the eye-catching features of the UT’s tableau. Besides, a miniature of a multi-storey wooden house has also featured in J&K’s tableau in this year’s Republic Day parade. The tableau is further dotted with intricate crewel work coupled with replicas of Chinar leaves, making this spectacle a riot of colours. Apart from reflecting the larger-than-life charisma of Kashmir valley, Jammu division and other parts of the UT, the tableau has also reflected nuances of daily life by installing miniatures of a house, which one would usually find in the hinterland.

Mannequins of male and female artisans working on making of handmade shawls have also been incorporated in the J&K’s tableau for this year’s R-Day parade. However, the most creative aspect of the tableau is folk artists performing live on the deck of the tableau. “We have been watching the artisans practising at the venue for the past few days. Today the full-dress rehearsal went off quite well,” said a tourist, who has been attending the rehearsals of the parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.

Prabowo Subianto, the President of Indonesia, has been invited as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day function in New Delhi this year, and it will be his first visit to India as President since assuming office in October 2024.

This year’s Republic Day events will feature over 10,000 distinguished visitors, including disaster relief workers, handloom artists, tribal beneficiaries, and Paralympic athletes. In the last two decades, Jammu and Kashmir’s Tableau has been part of every Republic Day Parade except in 2021 and 2024. However, Ladakh’s tableau was showcased in both these years.
