Pulwama’s Disha wins gold at International Sqay Cup in Russia

In a remarkable achievement, Disha Pandith, a 20-year-old Sqay martial artist from Koil village in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, has brought immense pride to the Union Territory and the nation by clinching gold and silver medals at the International Sqay Cup 2025 held in Podoslik, Moscow, Russia.

Representing India in the prestigious international tournament, which witnessed participation from 19 countries, Disha showcased extraordinary skill, grit and determination. Her stellar performance earned her gold in LOBA (Fight) and silver in the Autistic category, significantly contributing to India securing second place overall in the medal tally. Host nation Russia emerged as the champions, while Uzbekistan secured third position.

Disha, daughter of Praduman Krishan Pandith and Jyoti, is currently pursuing an Integrated Zoology degree and has already made a mark on the international stage, with this being her sixth international medal, including a previous gold at the Sqay World Cup.

Speaking to Excelsior, Disha expressed pride in her performance and highlighted the importance of support from her coach, Grandmaster Nazir Ahmad Mir and her family. “It’s their guidance and encouragement that help me balance both sports and studies,” she said.

Not only a champion athlete, Disha is also devoted to training young Sqay practitioners in Jammu and Kashmir. Her mission is to promote the art of self-defense among women, making them strong, confident and resilient. Officials from the Indian Sqay Federation praised her achievement, calling it a proud moment for the country and a boost for martial arts in the Union Territory.
