Lal Chowk ‘Clock Tower’ to be integrated into newly designed Plaza

In a major transformation programme with a new look and ambiance in and around the city center Lal chowk, near Clock Tower, Srinagar Smart City has started a transformation programme by integrating the famous ‘Clock Tower’ in it’s project of designing ‘New Plaza’ along with the facility of Amphitheatre, said an official on Friday.

Chief Engineer Srinagar Smart City, Iftikhar Ahmad Kakroo told that revamp is happening under the Srinagar Smart City programme and they will be integrating the famous ‘Clock Tower’ in the newly designed Plaza along with the façade improvement on both sides of Plaza.

“The area is going to witness a major revamp and the Clock Tower which was isolated and not part of the existing Plaza will be integrated into new designed Plaza along with the organic green spaces and illumination. And on one of the corners there will be an ‘Amphitheatre’ as well”, CE Srinagar Smart City said.

On being asked about the dismantling of the existing infrastructure of Plaza, CE Srinagar Smart City said the new design of Plaza has been designed as per the current requirements of Plaza and that they are also re-using the dismantled material as well.

“The Plaza has been made a long time back, and the area witnessed waterlogging issues and with the new Plaza design, we are going to make a drain as well. The area is going to witness a new look and would be a world-class place to visit with a redevelopment plan to make the city center a place where pedestrians can move around freely”, he added.

The officials at Srinagar Smart City added that along with the laying of sewerage lines and drainage, electricity lines and communication lines will be laid underground.

“The footpaths around the City center will also be revamped with new tiles and the work on the project is going to be pressed in full swing so that it’s completion is done at the earliest”, an official said.

Pertinently, the people had questioned the dismantling of Plaza Park near Clock Tower (GantaGhar), and had called for accountability saying that demolishing the already existing park is a waste of ‘taxpayers’ money.
