KU, JU among top 50 Universities across India

University of Kashmir (KU) as well as University of Jammu are among top 50 varsities and best 100 institutions across the country while six other institutes in J&K have also found place in the national ranking in their respective categories as the Union Ministry of Education today released ninth edition of the India Rankings for the year 2024, based on the parameters identified and defined in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Besides both the Agriculture universities in J&K, IIT Jammu, IIM Jammu, NIT Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University have been listed among the top NIRF ranked institutes in their respective categories.

In the overall ranking of all the institutes, KU and JU have secured 69th and 87th national rank, respectively even as both the institutes fall among the top 50 universities in NIRF Ranking for the year 2024.
No other institute from J&K, except KU and JU, could find place in the list of overall NIRF ranked top 100 institutions.

Among all the Universities, KU has secured 45th rank and JU 50th rank by scoring 54.43 points and 52.33 points, respectively in key parameters defined by NIRF. This is for the first time that JU breaks into the top 50 universities in the NIRF ranking.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also Chancellor of both the Universities, has congratulated JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, faculty members and non-teaching staff for this achievement.
In a post on X, office of LG J&K has also congratulated the Kashmir University, NIT Srinagar, SMVDU, SKUAST-Kashmir and SKUAST-Jammu for securing NIRF ranking.

Among all the top 40 agriculture institutes, SKUAST-Kashmir has secured 10th rank by scoring 60.04 points while SKUAST-Jammu has been ranked 20th with a score of 53.91 points.
Last year, SKUAST-Kashmir had secured 9th rank in this category while SKUAST-Jammu could not qualify to find a place in the NIRF ranking 2023.

Among all the Engineering Institutes, only IIT Jammu and NIT Srinagar from J&K could make into the NIRF ranking. IIT Jammu has secured 62nd rank with a score of 50.53 points while NIT Srinagar has got 79th rank with a score of 47.76 points.

In the year 2023, IIT Jammu and NIT Srinagar had secured 67th and 82nd NIRF ranking. Thus, both the institutes have registered slight improvement in their NIRF ranking.
IIM Jammu has been ranked 42nd among all the Management Institutes across the country while the Department of Architecture in SMVDU has been ranked 31st among top 40 Architecture and Planning Institutes in India.

Even as KU has performed better than JU in the overall as well as in the category of Universities, its ranking has slipped several notches from the last year place. In the year 2023, KU had secured 33rd NIRF ranking among the universities and 56th among all the institutions.

On the other hand, JU has significantly improved its ranking from 63rd to 50th place among the Universities while in the overall ranking, it had failed to secure any place among the top 100 institutions for NIRF 2023.
Among the top 50 State Public Universities in the country, KU has been ranked 14th and JU on 23rd place with a score of 61.66 and 55.79, respectively.

Pertinent to mention that the NIRF has been evaluating performance of the institutions across the country since 2015 in five key areas, Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
The participation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in these rankings has grown from 3,565 in 2016 to 10,845 in 2024, with the number of categories and subject domains expanding from four in 2016 to sixteen in 2024.

For the year 2024, the ranking exercise maintains the practice of providing a comprehensive “Overall” rank, alongside distinct rankings in the categories of Universities, Research Institutions, Degree Colleges, Innovation, and discipline-specific rankings in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Dental, Architecture & Planning, and Agriculture & Allied Sectors, Additionally, Open Universities, State Public Universities and Skill Universities have been included as new verticals in this year’s Rankings.
