Kashmir’s 2 million old Triassic Fossil Park gets global recognition

The Penn Dixie Board of Directors has confirmed “Kashmir Triassic Fossil Park” as one of the world’s geological treasures.

In a significant development, Kashmir’s two million old fossil site will be developed in Khonmoh area in collaboration with Penn Dixie’s Natural History Society  (World’s No 1 Fossil Park) in Hamburg, USA.

In a statement, Environmental Policy Group (EPG) announced that The Penn Dixie  Natural History Society, has released the resolution to collaborate with EPG through its constituent, Centre For Himalayan Geology  to assist and develop Kashmir Triassic fossil park, Guryul Ravines  at Khonmoh, Pampore.

“The EPG trustee, governing council member and chairman centre for Himalayan Geology (A Constituent Of Environmental Policy Group) Abdul Majid Bhat on the basis of his decades long hard work, study, research and perseverance succeeded in making an impressive and successful presentation to Penn Dixie Board in helping them assess the status of Fossil Park at Guryul Ravines, Khonmoh as a geological treasure.”

EPG recalls that the chairman centre For Himalayan Geology and Geo-Scientist Abdul Majid Bhat travelled to United States to make PowerPoint presentation on Kashmir Triassic Fossil Park to the Penn Dixie , New York with whom EPG has been communicating for the past 2-3 years.

The EPG acknowledges the noteworthy roles of the Governor S P Malik, the  former Governor N N Vohra,  commissioner department of culture, Saleem Shishgar, Dr G M Bhat (Presently University Of Jammu,) the Faculty, Researchers and students of department of geology, University Of Kashmir; divisional commissioner, Kashmir; the former deputy commissioner, Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone and many journalist, columnists and  writers who contributed in highlighting the importance of Guryul Ravines.

Moreover, the reference to the significant role of Mr Lawrence – Settlement Commissioner Of Kashmir for recording it in his book “The Valley Of Kashmir” and hundreds of geo-scientists, experts, geologists and researchers from over 30 Universities from world over for their visit, site study and research since 1842 to help put this fossil treasure on the global canvass.  The EPG hopes that with this significant forward movement the people of Jammu and Kashmir will see the development of internationally acknowledged and historical “Kashmir Triassic Fossil Park “ becoming a reality in coming days.
