In a moment of pride for Jammu & Kashmir and the broader environmental community, Manzoor Wangnoo, Chairman of the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO), was honoured at the prestigious Global Leaders Conference & Award on Sustainable Development, held on 12th April 2025 in Malé, Maldives.
The award recognises his unwavering commitment to ecological restoration, community-led conservation, and sustainable development across Kashmir, particularly through the pioneering initiative Mission Ehsaas, which has revived dying lakes, springs, and water bodies through grassroots engagement and tireless advocacy.
“Humbled and honoured,” said Mr. Wangnoo. “I dedicate this recognition to Team NLCO, our well-wishers, and every individual who believes in the power of collective action for nature.
This award is a reminder that sincere, consistent efforts in service of the environment do not go unnoticed.”
Under his leadership, NLCO has transformed forgotten ecosystems into thriving natural assets, contributing significantly to climate resilience, cultural preservation, and livelihood opportunities in the Kashmir Valley.
The recognition in Maldives adds to a growing list of accolades for Mr. Wangnoo, who has not only earned the admiration of environmentalists but has also served as a cultural ambassador for Kashmir, with dignitaries such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton having personally appreciated his work in promoting Kashmir’s heritage and craftsmanship.
