Jammu and Kashmir has launched a 100-day campaign under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) to eliminate TB from the region.
The campaign was virtually inaugurated by the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Masood, from the Kashmir Skill and Simulation Centre at RIHFW Dhobiwan, Tangmarg in Baramulla district.
The health minister highlighted the importance of addressing TB, calling it a significant public health challenge. She stated, “This campaign shows our dedication to achieving a TB-free J&K. Through collective efforts, we can overcome this disease.” The campaign focuses on improving TB detection, ensuring timely treatment, and promoting awareness about preventive measures.
MLAs Muhammad Shafi, Farooq Ahmad Shah, and Sajjad Shafi, who attended the event, praised the dedication of healthcare workers and pledged their full support to the campaign. Meera Srivastava, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health, urged citizens, healthcare providers, and organizations to unite for this mission. She emphasized that TB elimination is crucial for building stronger, healthier communities.
Director of Health Services, Kashmir, Dr.Jehangir Bakshi, praised the progress made under NTEP but stressed the importance of continued awareness and community involvement. State Tuberculosis Officer Dr. Adhfar Yasien pointed out challenges like stigma, late diagnoses, and treatment dropouts. She noted the campaign’s special focus on high-risk groups such as malnourished individuals, diabetics, and smokers.
Three districts—Budgam, Anantnag, and Pulwama—have already been declared TB-free. Srinagar and Kupwara have achieved gold certification under the Sub-National Certification Program, and J&K has earned a bronze medal for its TB elimination efforts.
The campaign includes active case detection, awareness drives, and support for TB patients. NGOs, community leaders, and counselors will also play key roles. During the launch, two TB eradication vans were flagged off to Srinagar and Baramulla, reflecting the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare.
This initiative aims to unite the government, healthcare workers, and the public in the fight against TB, paving the way for a healthier future.
