Historic First Film in Handwara’s Nagranar Village Ignites Local Excitement

A horror film titled Pashaan is being shot in the small village of Nagranar in the Handwara area of north Kashmir. The project has drawn attention from locals as it marks the first time that a movie production unit has reached this remote village for filming.

The film is being produced by Dharma Productions Private Limited. Locals said this is the first time that any movie or web series is being shot in Kupwara district, which lies close to the Line of Control. Residents expressed hope that such activity will bring attention to the scenic locations of the district.

Crew members present at the site said they found the place peaceful and suitable for filming. They said the natural surroundings and calm environment of Nagranar suited the theme of the horror film. However, the crew did not disclose how the location was identified for the project.

Residents of the area said they were excited to see a film crew working in their village. Many locals recalled that Nagranar gained visibility on social media in recent years due to its natural beauty. They believe that images and videos shared online may have helped filmmakers notice the location.

More than 35 crew members are currently involved in the shoot. Dozens of local residents are also assisting the production team in various tasks. Some are helping with logistics, while others are supporting the crew with transport and location-related work.

Javid Ahmad Khan, a local resident, said such film shoots can create opportunities for people in the area. He said that if more film projects come to the district, local youth could find work through tourism, guiding, transport and other services linked to film production.

People associated with the crew told Rising Kashmir that the team will shoot in Handwara for three days. After completing the schedule in Nagranar, the crew will move to other scenic locations across the Kashmir Valley to continue filming.

Officials said authorities have extended full support to ensure smooth shooting in the area. The local administration and police have coordinated with the production team so the work can continue without disruption.

Residents hope the project will help place Kupwara on the map for future film shoots.
