Eight-year-old Kashmiri girl kickboxer is an inspiration to many

Kashmiri girl Tajamul Islam, 8, from Bandipora district who won the gold at the World Kickboxing Championship in Italy.

“Lehro ke sath to koi bhi tair sakta hai, par asli insaan wo hai jo lehro ko cheer kar aage badhta hai”-this inspiring dialogue from Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Ghulam’ aptly fits eight-year-old Tajamul Islam, Kashmiri girl, who recently made the country proud by winning the gold medal at the world Kickboxing Championship of under-eight players in Italy’s Andria region.

Islam, a class two student, won six games during the five-day long championship, in which 90 countries had participated.

At such a tender age, Islam, with those glittering eyes, appeals to all Indian parents to support their children and encourage and motivate them towards sports.

“I am happy that I won and I am proud of it. I want to appeal to all the Indian parents to support their children and encourage them and motivate them towards sports,” she tells Media with such innocence and magnanimity.

“I am feeling very very happy. You cannot even imagine the level of my happiness. I am very proud of myself. I want to thank all the people who supported me. I am feeling proud that I won a gold medal for India. I want to thank my parents, my teachers and the Indian Army,” she adds.

She may be young but dreams, keep her inspired – even as she puts in 25 hours of practice a week.

A resident of Tarkpora village in Bandipora district, 65 km from Srinagar, Islam is a student of the Army Goodwill School.

“My principal is calling me to come to Kashmir at the earliest so that he can give me a big hug. It was a very tough journey for me but my father always encouraged me, brought me to New Delhi, and motivated me to win the gold medal,” she says.

The wonder-kid has created a sensation in the valley with her feat and a grand welcome awaits her on her arrival back home.
