DPS Srinagar & Zee Studios partner to bring football history alive with “Maidaan” screening

In a nod to the valley’s deep-rooted love for football and its storied history, DPS Srinagar DPS Srinagar collaborated with Zee Studios to host a special screening of “Maidaan”. This marked the first collective attendance of school students at a screening in 40 years.

The film, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Syed Abdul Rahim, the architect of Indian football’s golden era.
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, “Maidaan” pays homage to the legendary Syed Abdul Rahim, the mastermind behind India’s football heyday. Set against the backdrop of cricket’s dominance in the nation’s sports scene, the film, led by the talented Ajay Devgan portraying Rahim, sheds light on a forgotten era, showcasing India’s prowess as a football powerhouse in Asia.

One of the film’s highlights is its captivating sports action sequences, complemented by an enthralling background score by the legendary A.R. Rahman. Russian cinematographer Andrey Valantsov’s skillful camera work immerses viewers into the intensity of football matches, capturing every moment of sweat, blood, and triumph on the field.

Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s meticulous research shines through as the film explores the contributions of key players like Jarnail Singh, Peter Thangaraj, Fortunato Franco, and Arun Ghosh. Rahim’s tactical genius, turning defenders into strikers, and the dedication of injured players like Thangaraj, add depth and authenticity to the narrative.

The students were enthralled by the screening and unanimous in praise of the movie. Commenting on the screening, the Principal Shafaq Afshan said, “At DPS Srinagar we seek to cultivate the celebration of resilience, teamwork, and the unwavering spirit of perseverance in students that the movie promotes. It is therefore an occasion of immense celebration and joy for us to host the screening with the hope and belief some students will be inspired enough to turn their thoughts and efforts towards a career in football. We are grateful to the sponsors – Zee Studio and INOX Srinagar, the venue partners who made it possible that students got such an opportunity”.

The Chairman Vijay Dhar also spoke on the screening, and said “Our manifesto is to develop holistic excellence in the valley, and to that end aesthetic especially cinematographic aesthetic and its appreciation is a key strategy in its development. The screening is yet another affirmation of our commitment towards the cause of resource development in Kashmir.”
