District Baramulla have won the inter-district Junior Valleyball Championship on wednesday, after a gap of 30 years. The championship included 17 teams from all over the state of J&K and was organised here in Srinagar by the District Srinagar Volleyball Association, after an interval of 25 years.
The 30th Junior Valleyball Championship was held from October 22 to 24 under the banner of the Volleyball Association of Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with the JK State Sports Council. Around 300 volleyball players from all the state’s teams participated in the championship.
The final game of the championship was played between districts Jammu versus Baramulla in Polo Ground, Srinagar. The five-round game ended in just three rounds, with Baramulla winning all three in a row.
Captain of the Baramulla team Amir Bhat expressed his joy at winning the championship and said that the team is happy at their win, expecially when they have been on the verge of it for so long. “We had the set game plan in the final game, and our team decided to attack from the front right from the first round,” he said.
“We were conscious for the title as any district from Kashmir division has not been the champions yet; it was all that a dream came true.”
Man of the Tournament Shabir Ahmad, also from the same team, said that they had the game in their control after they won the game’s first round; in the following two rounds, they succeeded in turning the game their way to lift the championship. “It was a great experience for all of us, and we are happy to make Kashmir proud by being the first-time champions in 30 years,” he said.
Celebrating this being the first time that any district from the Kashmir division has won the championship, Baramulla team coach Rayees Bhat said that while the district’s teams had been in the runner-up side before, they had till date failed to lift the title. “We have been working hard for the championship; the everyday practice of the players made them the champions for the first time,” Rayees added.
Medals and trophies were distributed among the winners and the runners-up, and cash prizes for the winners and best players were also distributed in the championship’s concluding match by the chief guests from the Volleyball Association and the State Sports Council.
