Advance Int’l level Avalanche training course concludes at Gulmarg

The advance avalanche training course conducted by Australian Avalanche Skill Training Association concluded at ski resort of Gulmarg on Friday.
The Avalanche level two course was conducted by Australian Avalanche Skill Training Association under the guidance of Adam West from Australia saw participants from five Countries taking part in it. From India four trainees, Mehraj Dar of Tyndale Biscoe, Feroz Ahmed of Burn Hall, Omer of DI5 Adventures and Aashma Sharma took part in the highly skilled life saving course. From Scotland there were Laura Bird and Sandy Norval while as from Australia there were Sharon Van Breda and Vergil. Andrij was from Ukraine and Patric was from Canada.
In the course, avalanche survival statistics, the avalanche triangle, terrain consideration, meteorological factors, snowpack structure and snow metamorphism, decision making and the human factor in avalanche accidents, stability observations, snow stability testing, reporting and recording pit and test results, travel were the topics covered.
It was second such International level course conducted by the Association Gulmarg in order to train locals about the Avalanche safety.
“It was level two courses as we had successfully participated in level one course last year. For the skiers and the ski trainer’s knowledge of avalanche safety and skills is must and it can prove a difference between life and death during crucial junctures. We in Kashmir lack this kind of knowledge and it is eye opener course for trainee like me,” said Feroz.
Another participant Mehraj said that in Kashmir there is need for such type of life saving courses and local should take initiative in that.
“We saw Association organizing it and saw an opportunity to learn life saving skills during crucial situations. Lot of people in Kashmir knows about skiing and snowboarding but few are aware about these life saving skill set,” Mehraj said.
