Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPES), University of Kashmir (KU), concluded its 40-day-long Inter-Department Men’s Cricket Tournament at Ground ‘A’ of the Main Campus, with enthusiastic participation from students representing various teaching departments and satellite campuses.
The tournament witnessed an overwhelming response, with 52 teams and over 800 students participating in the competition, making it one of the largest inter-department cricket tournaments organised by the University in recent years.
The final between the Institute of Technology (IOT), Zakura Campus KU, and North Campus KU, turned into a thrilling contest. Batting first, IOT, Zakura Campus, posted a target of 128 runs in the allotted overs, with Arsalan contributing 27 runs to the team’s total.
In turn, North Campus also scored 128 runs in the stipulated overs, taking the match into a Super Over. In the decisive contest, North Campus scored 22 runs, while IOT, Zakura Campus, managed 10, enabling North Campus to clinch the title by 12 runs in a nail-biting finish and dethrone the defending champions.
The concluding ceremony was presided over by Director, DPES KU, Prof. Raies Qadri, and attended by Dean and Director, IoT, Zakura Campus KU, Prof. Muhammad Tariq Banday, and Director, North Campus KU, Dr. Sheikh Ghulam Muhammad, as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Qadri congratulated both finalists for their impressive performances and commended all participating teams for displaying sporting spirit and discipline throughout the tournament.
He also announced that the Directorate would organise a coaching camp for selected probables from the tournament to prepare them for participation in the forthcoming Inter-Collegiate Cricket Tournament.
Prof. Banday highlighted the importance of sports in the overall development of students and urged them to actively participate in sporting activities with enthusiasm and passion.
Dr. Sheikh Ghulam Muhammad also congratulated both the teams.
Earlier, Assistant Director, DPES KU, Dr. Nadeem presented a brief report about the tournament.
Medals and trophies were subsequently distributed among the winners and runner-ups.
The tournament was coordinated by Assistant Director, DPES KU, Dr. Nadeem Ahmad, with assistance from Cricket Coaches DPES KU, Sakeena Akhter and Amjad Qadir. The proceedings of the concluding ceremony were conducted by Football Coach DPES KU, Sajid Yousuf Dar.
