Indian Army Promotes Winter Sports with Chinar Open Games 2026 in Gulmarg

The Indian Army will host the much-anticipated Chinar Open Winter Games 2026 at the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg on 19–20 February, reaffirming its commitment to promoting winter sports and nurturing emerging athletic talent in Kashmir.

Set against the majestic Himalayan backdrop, the two-day sporting event will bring together amateur athletes, adventure enthusiasts and young competitors from across the region in a celebration of endurance, skill and competitive spirit. Organisers describe the Games as a premier platform for local youth to demonstrate their abilities while strengthening the culture of winter sports in the Valley.

Gulmarg, widely regarded as one of India’s finest winter destinations, has increasingly become a hub for snow-sport activities. The Indian Army’s continued support through the Chinar Open Winter Games is seen as a major catalyst in expanding participation and encouraging structured training opportunities for aspiring athletes.

The 2026 edition builds on the success of previous years. The 2025 Chinar Open Winter Games, held in March last year, witnessed record participation with over 600 competitors, including a significant number of young girls. Events ranged from skiing and snowboarding to skating competitions, drawing praise for both organisation and community engagement. Several young athletes emerged as standout performers, highlighting the region’s growing pool of winter-sports talent.

Similarly, the 2024 edition had seen strong turnout despite harsh weather conditions, reflecting rising enthusiasm for winter sports in Kashmir. News reports at the time noted that participation had steadily increased year after year, positioning the event as a flagship winter sports festival in the region.

Officials say the Games are not merely a sporting contest but also a youth-engagement initiative aimed at promoting discipline, teamwork and healthy competition. The event also contributes to winter tourism by showcasing Gulmarg’s natural terrain as an ideal destination for snow-based adventure sports.

With preparations underway and excitement building, the Chinar Open Winter Games 2026 are expected to draw large crowds and renewed interest in winter athletics. For participants, it is an opportunity to compete at a high level; for spectators, it promises an inspiring display of resilience and sporting excellence amid Kashmir’s iconic winter landscape.
