Major Boost to Medical Education: J&K Adds 379 MBBS, 118 PG Seats

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) Friday said that Jammu and Kashmir has been allotted one new medical college along with 379 MBBS seats and 118 postgraduate seats for the academic session 2025–26.

As per official figures submitted in the Lok Sabha, the ministry, has approved the expansion of medical educational institutes and seats across the country. “The fresh allocation places J&K among the states and Union Territories that witnessed an increase in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical intake this year.”

Officials further said the approvals were processed by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) after evaluating proposals as per NMC’s Minimum Standard Requirements, which include mandatory teaching hospital infrastructure, bed strength, diagnostic facilities, skill labs, hostels, libraries, and other academic components.

The ministry during the session further highlighted that under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishing new medical colleges attached to district hospitals, Baramulla and Kupwara are among the J&K’s aspirational districts that are eligible for priority consideration, while Rajouri falls under tribal district categorisation.
