GCW Sgr hosts lecture on ‘Education in the age of AI’

As part of the Mehmooda Ali Shah Interdisciplinary Lecture Series, the Department of English at Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, Friday organised a compelling guest lecture titled ‘Fashioning the Self: Aims of Education in the Age of AI’, delivered by Professor Mufti Mudasir Farooqi.

In his address, Mufti Mudasir emphasised that in the age of artificial intelligence, education must transcend the mere transmission of technical skills and instead focus on shaping the self. He argued for a transformative educational approach—one that nurtures self-reflection, critical thinking, empathy, and ethical responsibility—equipping students not just to adapt to AI, but to meaningfully shape the future. Highlighting the perils of superficial learning and the potential erosion of selfhood, Mufti Mudasir also warned against the threat of creeping totalitarianism. Drawing from thinkers such as Alvin Toffler, Aldous Huxley, and Allama Iqbal, he particularly stressed the contemporary relevance of Iqbal’s concept of Khudi (Self) in cultivating identity and purpose in a tech-driven world.

Earlier, Principal Yasmeen Farooq welcomed the guest and underlined the need for contemplation and introspection in an era marked by distraction and digital overload. She stressed that such lectures contribute meaningfully to the holistic development of students. The lecture was attended by students of 6th Semester English Literature and faculty members. Saba Rouf introduced the guest and presented an overview of his literary contributions, while Asma Arshi and As Sami Hassan served as rapporteurs. The event concluded with a vibrant interactive session followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Saba.

Held in honour of the legendary educator Mehmooda Ali Shah, who served as principal of the college from 1954 to 1974, the lecture series continues to celebrate her legacy of academic excellence and visionary leadership—especially significant as the college marks its 75th anniversary this year.
