The growth of gymnastics in Shopian received a significant boost with the inauguration of the District Shopian Gymnastics Unit and conclusion of the 1st District Shopian Gymnastics Championship 2024-25 at Sports Stadium . The championship witnessed over a hundred gymnasts from the region competing, marking a major step in promoting gymnastics in the area.
Kiran Wattal, Vice President of the Gymnastics Federation of India, graced the event, along with other distinguished dignitaries, including Abdul Qayoom Pirzada (Ex-Chief Sports Officer J&K Sports Council) and Khazir Muhammed (Qualified Referee, AKFI). Their presence highlighted the importance of the initiative in uplifting gymnastics in Shopian.
The event was a collaborative effort between the Adhoc Body of District Gymnastics Unit Shopian, Gymnastics Association of J&K, and J&K Sports Council.
The success of this championship and the establishment of the Gymnastics Unit is part of a broader effort to encourage youth participation, instill discipline, and promote a healthy sports culture in the region. Wattal acknowledged the achievements of gymnasts in national and international competitions, attributing their success to the strong support of LG Manoj Sinha.
