Sports Minister inaugurates All India Inter-University Winter Games

The All India Inter-University Winter Games 2024-25 were inaugurated by Satish Sharma, Minister of Youth Services and Sports, here today. The event held at the picturesque Gulmarg, witnessed the participation of over 200 athletes and officials from 27 universities across India, competing in skiing and ice-stock competitions.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, Vice Chancellor of CU Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, Dr. Baljit Singh Sekhon, Joint Secretary of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Farooq Ahmad Shah, MLA Gulmarg and Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dean of Academic Affairs at CU Kashmir. The event was organized by Central University Kashmir in collaboration with the AIU.

Satish Sharma expressed his pride in being part of the prestigious event that celebrates India’s winter sports culture and sportsmanship. “This event provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents. I encourage all participants to become the ambassadors of Gulmarg and Kashmir, spreading the word about its beauty and tourism potential,” he said.

Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, Vice Chancellor of CU Kashmir, expressed excitement about hosting the event and highlighted its significance in promoting winter tourism in Kashmir. He remarked, “This event showcases the athletic prowess of students and the beauty of Gulmarg as a winter sports destination.”

Prof. Nilofer Khan and Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo also lauded the efforts behind organizing the event, recognizing the growing interest in winter sports and its role in promoting national unity.
Dr. Baljit Singh Sekhon and MLA Gulmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah, also emphasized the importance of winter sports in fostering youth engagement and promoting tourism in the region.

The ceremony concluded with a detailed address by Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, Dean School of Education, who welcomed the participants, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr. Kokab Azeem, Head of the Department of Physical Education at CU Kashmir.
