Kashmir’s tourism sector thrives with 16% increase in international visitors in 2024

The Kashmir Valley, famed for its spectacular alpine beauty and cultural richness, is now emerging as a global tourism hotspot. Recent figures reveal a remarkable surge in international tourist arrivals, reflecting the valley’s growing appeal on the world stage.

In 2023, the valley welcomed 37,677 international tourists, alongside 2,678,219 domestic visitors, culminating in a total of 2,710,496 travellers. However, 2024 proved to be a groundbreaking year for Kashmir’s global tourism ambitions. A record 43,654 international visitors explored the valley, an impressive 16% increase from the previous year. These foreign arrivals contributed to the overall total of 2,986,780 tourists in 2024, including 2,943,126 domestic travellers.

This unprecedented growth results from sustained global outreach efforts by the Tourism Department, including participation in international tourism fairs, roadshows, and digital marketing campaigns. The department’s focus on showcasing Kashmir as a safe and serene destination for high-value tourists has drawn attention from Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Key months such as July 2024 saw peak tourist activity, with over half a million visitors recorded, including a substantial number of international travellers. The rising interest from foreign tourists underscores Kashmir’s potential to establish itself as a world-class destination for leisure, adventure, and cultural tourism.

The tourism department expressed optimism for continued growth, citing the valley’s enhanced infrastructure, improved connectivity, and bolstered security measures. “Kashmir is now firmly positioned on the global tourism map,” he stated. “We are confident that our efforts will bring even more international tourists, offering them unparalleled experiences of Kashmir’s natural and cultural heritage.”

As part of its strategy, the Tourism Department aims to promote sustainable, high-end tourism while maintaining the valley’s ecological balance. Local ethnic communities are actively involved in initiatives to preserve the environment and enhance the tourism experience. This approach has been well-received globally, attracting eco-conscious travellers seeking unique destinations.

The surge in international footfall also highlights Kashmir’s integration into mainstream global tourism circuits. Visitors from Europe, the Americas, and Asia have lauded the valley for its pristine beauty, hospitality, and cultural vibrancy.

With its ambitious vision and global campaigns, Kashmir is set to redefine itself as a premier international destination, bridging cultures and creating unforgettable experiences for travellers from all corners of the world.
