SKUAST-K and Mahyco ink MoU for academic, research, entrepreneurship

Shere-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) and Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for academic, research and entrepreneurship at their headquarters at Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
The MoU between SKUAST-Kashmir and Seven Star Fruits Pvt. Ltd. (Mahyco group) was signed by Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir and Dr. Rajendra Barwale, Chairman Mahyco in presence of galaxy of scientists.

The association goes beyond traditional agricultural collaborations, specifically addressing advanced areas of agricultural research and innovation. In addition to resource sharing, training, and technological support, the agreement will offer crucial backing for student internships and hands-on training in cutting-edge fields like molecular genetics, fidelity testing, and other genomic studies in horticultural crops.

The collaboration includes a focus on nurturing the next generation of agricultural scientists and professionals. SKUAST-K students will have the opportunity to join internship to gain real-world exposure to molecular genetics, genomic studies, and biotechnological practices. This experience will help students gain practical insights into the modern techniques that are shaping the future of agriculture. Molecular genetics, a key focus of the MoU, plays a pivotal role in crop improvement by identifying genes that can improve traits such as resistance to diseases, pests, and environmental stress. Internships and training programs in this area will allow students to work with advanced molecular techniques like gene mapping, marker-assisted selection, and CRISPR technologies, thereby equipping them with the skills needed to engage in high-impact agricultural research.

The partnership will provide students access to practical training in fidelity testing, using the latest technologies and laboratory techniques to assess genetic consistency in crops. By combining SKUAST-Kashmir’s academic rigor with Mahyco’s industry experience, this collaboration will foster an environment conducive to innovation. The direct involvement of students in industry-backed research projects will give them a competitive edge, equipping them with advanced skills in biotechnology, plant breeding, and genetic engineering. This hands-on experience will not only enhance their academic learning but also prepare them to address real-world challenges in agriculture.

The MoU represents a comprehensive approach to uplifting the agricultural education landscape in Kashmir by equipping students with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in emerging fields such as molecular genetics and genomics. These initiatives are expected to result in significant contributions to sustainable agriculture and crop improvement in the region, ultimately benefiting both local farmers and the broader agricultural community.
