Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament’ commenced

2nd Edition of ‘Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament’ commenced on 19 Aug 2024 with a fan fare at Polo View Hockey Stadium. The tournament is being org by HQ 31 Sub Area of Chinar Corps in collaboration with J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the greatest field hockey player in history, popularly known as the ‘Wizard’. He had won three Olympic Gold Medals in 1928, 1932 & 1936. The birth anniversary of “The magician” is celebrated as National Sports Day on 29 Aug every year.

A total of 12 teams from 10 Districts of Kashmir Valley are participating in the tournament. The matches are being played on league basis. The first match was played between teams of Kupwara & Anantnag, and was won by Kupwara with a score of 4-3 goals. For an exciting performance Mr Jaipal of Kupwara was awarded Man of the Match Medal.

The match was attended by senior army officials and other prominent guests from civil administration, J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K during the opening Ceremony.
