J&K explores new tourist destinations to decongest popular spots

In a bid to ease congestion at its renowned tourist hotspots, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Union Territory government has launched an initiative to promote lesser-known destinations. This strategic move aims to diversify tourism offerings and highlight unique locations across the region, ranging from adventurous sports and nature exploration to leisure activities and pilgrimage sites.
Officials have revealed plans to present ambitious proposals to the Union Ministry and the World Bank for funding and support. The initiative comes amidst record visitor numbers at popular destinations such as Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg. The objective is to distribute tourist traffic more evenly, ensuring a more sustainable approach to tourism while boosting local economies.
The J&K Tourism Department has identified approximately 35 locations across the Union Territory for immediate promotion. These destinations, described as hidden gems, promise distinct experiences for travellers. By showcasing these lesser-known spots, the government aims to provide diverse activities catering to various interests, including adventure sports, nature tourism, leisure, and pilgrimage.
This initiative aligns with sustainable tourism principles, aiming to reduce environmental impacts on heavily visited areas and foster economic growth in new locales. It represents a forward-thinking approach to tourism management in Jammu and Kashmir, encouraging visitors to explore the region’s rich cultural and natural diversity.
