J&K Film Policy aims to boost tourism & job creation: LG

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu & Kashmir unveiled the book titled “The Swinging 70s: The Stars, Style and Substance in Hindi Cinema,” edited by NirupamaKotru and Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, during an event in Srinagar.

Lauding the editors and publisher Om Books for their contribution, Sinha emphasised that cinema is not merely entertainment but a potent force for societal change. He highlighted the role of Indian filmmakers in balancing entertainment with social responsibility, shaping cultural ethos, and contributing to nation-building.

Sinha underscored the significance of the book as a portal to revisit the vibrant era of 1970s Hindi cinema. He also highlighted the special relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the world of cinema, noting its pivotal role in socio-economic development.

The Lieutenant Governor pointed out efforts by the UT Administration to revive the film industry, making Jammu & Kashmir a preferred destination for film shoots due to its rich culture, picturesque landscapes, and upgraded infrastructure.

He mentioned the J&K Film Policy’s role in fostering a dynamic film ecosystem, including the establishment of a Single Window Cell for expedited film shoot permissions. Sinha highlighted how the resurgence of film activity and reopening of cinemas have created new opportunities for youth employment and economic growth, aiming to attract investment and boost tourism.

Meanwhile, Sinha called upon the community to support government initiatives aimed at building a peaceful and prosperous Jammu & Kashmir.
The book “The Swinging 70s” was noted for its collection of essays celebrating various facets of the era, including fashion, music, film genres, iconic stars, and untold behind-the-scenes stories. The event was attended by senior officials, editors, publishers, literary figures, and a large gathering of art and film enthusiasts.
