J&K govt to offer special incentives to attract filmmakers to the region..

In recent times, Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as a sought-after destination for film tourism, prompting the government to contemplate streamlining filming procedures in the region to attract more filmmakers and production crews.

The Kashmir valley, in particular, has garnered attention from Bollywood to South Indian film industries, with notable stars like Shahrukh Khan and John Abraham choosing its picturesque locales for their movie shoots.

As per officials “Government is planning to make the No Objection Certificate (NOC) and other processes more accessible to filmmakers.” Also, they are considering special concessions for those planning their movies in Jammu and Kashmir valley. Historically renowned for its cinematic appeal during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Jammu and Kashmir has reclaimed its standing as an inviting destination for filmmakers.
“We want more filmmakers to come and shoot their movies in Jammu and Kashmir. So, we are making some good changes to the rules. We will give filmmakers more discounts and make it easier for them to get the permits they need,” Secretary of Tourism YashaMudgal earlier told Rising Kashmir.

She said, “Easing film policy will make filming here a lot smoother. Also, since more people are visiting because of movies, we want to bring big filmmakers here to shoot their movies too. We believe that by making these changes, more people will want to come and shoot their movies in Kashmir. We are working hard to make Kashmir a top place for filming, and we will keep working on it.”

In the past two years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a significant surge in filming activity, with over 300 films and web series choosing its picturesque locations as settings. Notably, 102 Bollywood and Tollywood productions received permission to shoot in the region in 2023 alone.

This uptick in filming can be attributed to the initiatives taken by the government, such as the launch of the Jammu and Kashmir Film Policy in 2021. This policy aimed to attract filmmakers to the region and included the establishment of a Film Development Fund (FDF) within the Information Department.

Since the film policy was introduced and following the G-20 meeting in Srinagar city, both tourism and film tourism have witnessed a surge. With the redevelopment of Srinagar city under the Smart City project, several industry professionals have chosen to shoot their movies in Srinagar.

Local filmmakers see this as a positive development, as it provides opportunities for a large number of local artists to work in the industry. Additionally, this increased filming activity is expected to attract more tourists. Viewers who see Kashmir in movies are likely to consider visiting the region, which will contribute to the growth of the local economy.
