Sheikh Areeb aims to play cricket at international level

Growing up in a cricket atmosphere, Sheikh Areeb Irfan started playing cricket at the age of 8.

From native village, Shallabugh of district Ganderbal, he belongs to the family of cricket enthusiasts. His grandfather, father and uncles are all associated with the sport, who support him to be an international cricketer.

After playing well at district level, he represented in the state level and captained the state team which was runner up in the year 2020-2021.

He has learnt various techniques from various players who come to play in the ground. “My father is my inspiration who was himself a cricketer. I watch many reputed players in the local ground, practice with them and learn as much as possible,” he said.

Studies is not what his parents are stressing on or he has no pressure to be a doctor or an engineer. His interest lies in cricket and this is where he wants to make his career.

He said, “My family told me to work hard in this game. Cricket is a vast field and has a lot of opportunities to offer. My parents want me to play beyond gully cricket and earn a name in the sports only.”

As more youngsters are opting sports not just for passion, he said that the authorities are providing the facilities and taking initiative to groom the young sports enthusiasts.

“Now many players come and train the raw and young talent which paves way for us as well,” he said.

Based on the specialty, he has been selected as a batsman by Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association but in local cricket, he bowls, bats and is a wicket-keeper as well.
