Sopore boy develops model to reduce accidents at blind curves; selected for national event

National ATAL Innovation Exhibition, an innovative model developed by a Sopore boy can be a change maker in road safety programmes across the globe.

Ruhban Abdullah, a student of 12th standard at Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) of Bomai Sopore will represent Jammu and Kashmir to showcase his model- display ‘Blind Curve Safety Mechanism’.

His innovative model has been selected by ATAL Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog Government of India and will represent J&K for display of the project in the national event scheduled at Bangalore from September 20-23.

Ruhban told Rising Kashmir he is overwhelmed to see his innovative model for reducing accidents at blind curves selected for the exhibition.

“I had an idea about the project for a long time. But I couldn’t work on the project due to lack of resources.

This is not my individual effort, my teachers, mentors played a crucial role to get this project done,” said Ruhban.

The model ‘Blind Curve Safety Mechanism’ uses Arduino, and C++ programming language.

“The model uses sensors at the two ends of a blind curve with buzzers. When a vehicle on the opposite side is nearby, the buzzer will inform the other vehicle. It will be more productive as it is better than convex mirrors used at blind turns,” Ruhban added.

He said the model will work in extreme foggy weather conditions also as convex mirrors fail in bad weather conditions.

Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is Government of India’s flagship initiative to create and promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.

Ruhban is looking forward to becoming a software engineer and innovating more such things.

Principal BHSS Bomai, Abdul Ahad Gojree said it is a proud moment for the entire education department especially for the school as the students are proving their mettle in every field.

“Ruhban is among our brilliant students. We facilitated his idea, provided him space and tools to prepare this model,” he said.

Ishfaq Ahmed Mir, Ruhban’s mentor and the Incharge Atal Tinkering Lab, BHSS Bomai Sopore said, “Ruhban worked hard for the completion of the project and finally succeeded in preparing the road safety mode.”

Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Dr Sehrish Asgar visited the school and interacted with students of BHSS Bomai Sopore and complimented them for designing Smart objects and models in Atal Tinkering Lab under Atal Innovation Mission.

“Ruhban Abdullah, student of Govt Hr. Sec School Bomai, Baramulla has been selected by ATAL Innovation Mission NITI Ayog to represent JK(UT) in National ATAL Innovation Exhibition Bangalore for Blind Curve Safety Mechanism model scheduled from 20th to 23rd September,” DC Baramulla said in a tweet.
