Meet Shaib Rasheed Malik Skiing from Baramulla whom skiing takes to national, int’l places

Shaib Rasheed Malik, was fond of skiing. He went to ski resort Gulmarg when he was just seven to learn skiing and never looked back.

At the world famous ski resort, he never stopped dreaming big. Today he wears many hats and is an inspiration for young skiers.

Shaib hailing from Kalantra Bala, a village in Baramulla has made it to international skiing events. He has also participated and shined in national skiing competitions.

Recently, he won a gold medal in the Junior National Championship in Gulmarg held early this month.

His parents especially his father always encouraged and motivated him which gave him strength in continuing with skiing.

“There is no second option to hard work. But on the other side family support is equally important. They were at my back when I needed them the most. My family always supported me. They are the motivation for me,” he said.

Shaib wants to do something for Kashmir’s aspiring skiers who often face trouble in moving ahead.

“I will never stop skiing. I will continue to give my best and be a motivation for the aspiring skiers who need some sort of counseling to excel in the field,” said Shaib.

He said he was also inspired by internationally recognized Kashmiri skier Arif Khan, who hails from Tangmarg.

Besidies, skiing Shaib likes playing cricket. At the Kalantra village, where Shaib was born and brought up, he plays cricket and motivates his fellow mates to go for sports activities.

“I never stop playing. I am on my toes round the year,” he said.

Shaib said J&K Sports Council has always been there for his support.

“They have also motivated and were a source of encouragement for me,” he said.

In 2014, Shaib played senior and Snowboarding Championship in Uttrakhand in which he scored fourth rank.

He said during his participation in national championships he was also supported by Indian Olympic Association.

In 2019, Shaib had an opportunity to participate in First Children Asia International held in Russia where he was among top ten skiers.

Besides, he has also participated in the Senior and Snowboarding Championship held in Uttrakhand in 2020.
