Empowering Disabilities

Disable people don’t need sympathy but need opportunity and education to become independent and to survive in the society with equality. Kashmir has many such individuals and organisation who actually working to empower the disabled people and giving them a ray of hope in darkness.

Javed Ahmad Tak, the founder of Zaiba Aapa’s School, teaches more than 100 handicapped students and is the only such facility in south Kashmir. The school caters education to every type of physically disabled child so different teaching methods are used for teaching students with different disabilities. The school has a very good academic record. Many students of this school have excelled in top exams. Zakia Manzoor, a girl who is 100 per cent visually impaired was the product of the Zaiba Aapa school. 2017, she shined in her matriculation exam securing 85 per cent marks.

Dr Mohammed Maqbool Mir, an angel to many differently abled children. Shafaqat Special School, near Hajj House Srinagar prepares disabled children for a normal life. Shafaqat Special School started in 2000 for Multiple Disabilities, and since then, hundreds of children have been rehabilitated. At present, 80 students are enrolled in the school and about 600 children are attended on an out-patient basis. Various sections of school are aided by qualified experts and modern gadgets. A vocational training center for children above the age of 14 years is currently being run in collaboration with Kashmir Government Polytechnic College. So far, 45 children have been trained in different trades.

Lets pledge and celebrate this International Day of People with Disability with the aim to empower and ensure inclusiveness and equality. Lets pledge to make their lives better and provide them the help to overcome their self-doubt and fight against social stigmas.
