9-Year-Old Wonderkid from Kashmir’s Gurez Valley Builds Unique Counting Pen!

For those of you who struggle to adhere to the word limit in exams, a pen invented by a 9-year-old boy, might just be the solution you’ve been looking for!

Muzaffar Ahmad Khan studies in Class 3, in a government school in the Tulail Valley, which is located in the Gurez Tehsil in Kashmir.Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the valley is the boy’s home.

Muzaffar recently received his exam results and was quite disappointed when he saw them. He realised that he only had himself to blame as he had fallen short of the minimum word-limit in the exams.

As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and Muzaffar’s case is no different. He tried to find a way out of a problem—that of keeping count of words so that he did not face this problem in the future. Brainstorming this problem, gave birth to the ‘counting pen’ idea.

So, how does the counting pen work?

The pen, according to Muzaffar, has a casing attached to its rear end. Then, a casing to house electronics is made and printed using a 3D printer. A small LCD monitor is attached, and it shows the word count. Alternatively, the word count can be displayed via a message, on one’s mobile phone screen.

A prototype of the pen, found its way to the display at the Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, organised by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

According to Muzaffar, the counting pen will be available in the market in May 2018 as the NIF has already decided to make it commercially available.
